Living Room Cardiff’s peer support is the process of giving and receiving non-professional, non-clinical assistance to achieve long-term recovery from severe alcohol and/or other drug-related problems or harmful behaviours.
 

The definition contains several critical elements:

Process of recovery implies that there is a continuity of support over time, which is central to sustaining long-term recovery. The main focus is not on addiction–related pathology, but emphasising the empowerment of the person and building on their strengths and assets. Importance is placed on peer support and involvement of family members and friends in helping the person to build meaningful and valued lives, realise their aspirations and contribute positively to society.

Non-clinical means that it is different from clinical services that involve diagnosis and treatment by health care professionals. However, all peer workers are also being trained and appropriately supervised. Here, professional clinical services may have a peer quality to them when they are delivered by psychologists, social workers or addiction counsellors who are in recovery. To clarify this, individuals seeking recovery may receive peer support within a group therapy, but this is lead by a professional therapist/ addictions counsellor.

Peer based means that support and services are provided by individuals who have successfully achieved addiction recovery. Recovery is concentrated around three main elements: 
1. sobriety (or working towards abstinence from the substance/drug/behaviour), 
2. improvement in general health (physical, emotional relational), and 
3. reintegration (community life and participation).

Recognising one’s need of help is the first step to recovery. However, people in recovery and their families are often not prepared for the issues that follow once abstinence is achieved – specifically coming to terms with living alongside a non drinking/or using family member, and for the people in recovery him/herself, getting used to living a sober life.

Living Room Cardiff’s peer support is the process of giving and receiving non-professional, non-clinical assistance to achieve long-term recovery from severe alcohol and/or other drug-related problems or harmful behaviours.

This support is provided by people who have similar characteristics (e.g. age, gender, ethnicity, co-occuring disorders) and experiential knowledge (understand recovery as a lived experience), and are able to assist others in initiating recovery, maintaining recovery, and enhancing the quality of personal and family life in long-term recovery. These similarities allow for mutual identification between the recipient and the helper, and give them a sense of confidence and trust. The relationship in peer support is non-professional, which means that it is closer to the reciprocity of friendship, and there is a minimal power differentiation between the helper and recipient. Support provided involves the provision of emotional, psychological, social and informational aid. ¹

Peer-based recovery support (The session runs with Recovery Coaches)
Peer-Based Recovery Support is a process of giving and receiving non-professional, non-clinical assistance to achieve long-term recovery from alcohol and/or other drug-related problems, Instigating Peer-Based Recovery Support Services, whereby the stages of recovery are spanned and may encompass support at individual, family, neighbourhood, and community levels, will help us improve treatment provision in Cardiff.

We believe that anyone can recover and that recovery is often an incremental process that can be effectively managed over time. 
We will support abstinence as your ultimate goal, but we understand your recovery is beginning if your use of alcohol/drugs/or harmful behaviour decreases. We will celebrate every success and provide you with support to continue forward with hope.
 

We believe there are many paths to recovery. 
Your path may be spiritual, clinical, cultural or peer-based. We will work with you to clear your path as you walk it.

We are a trauma-informed recovery support program.
We recognize that many individuals’ lives have unfolded within abuse and victimization, that their use of substances was their way to manage the distress of that abuse and victimization, and that their continued use of substances puts them at further risk for more abuse and victimization. We will never ask, “What is wrong with you?” but rather “What happened to you?” 

We will support you as you make the connections
between your alcohol/drug use/or harmful behaviour and the losses you have suffered. We will partner with you as you explore the impact those losses have had on your life.
 

We will help you if you ask us. 
Your participation in our projects will always be your choice and will only happen with your informed consent. We will proceed as your partner, at your pace.
 

We will work hard to remove barriers to your recovery. 
We will support your recovery efforts because we believe you are entitled to receive our services and our help.

We understand recovery is most consistently maintained in community,
among the support of your peers. We believe that you will draw strength, resilience, and wisdom from each other.
